There is dismay over a decision not to replace vandalised equipment at a children's playground.

The zip line at Ascot Way playground in Rustington has been plagued by vandalism in recent years with at least a dozen incidents from damage to springs to fires. The repair bill has been put at £8,000.

The line and supporting posts were damaged in the autumn and Arun District Council has decided not to repair it. It has chosen to remove it instead to avoid further repair costs.

Conservative councillor Shaun Gunner said the actions of a small number of "thugs" should not mean "law-abiding children" miss out on equipment.

But a council spokeswoman said: "Vandalism is an issue that causes cost, safety concerns and disruption.

"In just over three years, there have been 13 separate incidents of vandalism to the play equipment at Ascot Way at a cost of to the public of just over £8,000 to rectify."

Two children were convicted for vandalising the zip line following an investigation by Sussex Police and the council.

“On this basis there are no immediate plans to replace the play equipment. Experience has shown that a ‘cooling off’ period is effective in helping to manage vandalism.

"This will be kept under review to consider alternative opportunities to enhance the existing play offer in the future.”

Cllr Gunner said: "I'm pleased the police have caught some of the perpetrators but I don't think it's fair that law-abiding children should have play equipment removed because of the actions of a minority.

"Rustington already has less play provision than many other parishes in Arun, so I think alternative equipment should be installed here instead, rather than children missing out."
